ADSL trouble

My DSL modem died this week, just got a new one. This makes it my fourth modem in three years.

Is my line haunted, or do they make these things so unbelievably crappy nowadays?

So much work to catch up now…

  1. Do you live somewhere where you get a lot of lightning?

In the UK a specific warning is put on almost all telephony connected kit… Something like “Ensure devices are not plugged in or in use during a thunder storm”

Reason for this is half the telephone network goes live when the ground is struck, frying modems and people who are on the phone.

  2. Most consumer UPS have a surge protected telephone connector, I highly recommend getting one.

Still, consumer dsl modems, wi-fi routers are a junk. I’ve had a numerous replacements.

  3. Surge protectors are a must, and you can even get them standalone for telephone, or part of a 4way socket ideal for hooking up to a computer that doesn’t really need ups.

  4. Woops sorry for the multiple posts, the web server kept throwing bad request errors…

Hrm, that’s nasty, I should check out what my box is doing. Will delete the dupes once I’ve traced it down.

I think I lost one to lightning last year. This one however was due to a bad capacitor, as I just noticed while screwing it open.

    Total junk indeed…

They skimp on the power filter components, since they’re pricey.
