The long wait is over, Canon just announced the EOS 450D. I’m getting one as soon as possible.

Canon EOS 450D
Interestingly, it uses Secure Digital instead of the usual CompactFlash cards. Does this mean we are seeing the beginning of the end of CF, or is it just Canons clever way of luring existing EOS 400D users (who have a stack of CF cards) into a higher price category?

I think being SD vs CF is just product tier differentiation still at this point. Nikon has been doing the same thing.
I can’t speak for DSLRs in particular but CF isn’t going anywhere, looking at recent product introductions.
It’s the end for CF. And the reasons are two:
1. CF did not evolve as fast as SDHC evolved. Right now, you get a 16GB CF and a 16GB SDHC for a pretty much similar price. For its size, CF cards should be 64GBs by now, but they aren’t. They max at 32GB, and they are very rare.
2. 4 GBs is already enough for most people, so SDHC is good enough.
And given that SDs are so much smaller, manufacturers now prefer them.
Hey man, is it possible to edit my email address on the previous comment to include some anti-spam characters in it? Usually when we reply on blogs the email address is NOT visible to all, but on your blog it is. I didn’t expect that because it’s not the norm. Thx.
Eugenia: I disabled the display of email adresses for now.
Good point on SDHC btw!
I think it’s really clever
1) It makes it more tempting to compact camera owners to buy a 450 DSLR. “honey we can even use the same memory cards”.
2) And at the same time it makes it more tempting to existing DSLR owners to buy a more expensive DSLR than 450.
CF is getting more rare all the time, but it’s by no means dead or dying soon.
Ruub, can we borrow this camera because our party camera died in the process (or it drowned in alcohol, still not figured out)
